Provincetown
has been an artists' mecca since the 1890s, boasting the likes
of Charles
Hawthorn, Hans Hoffman, Robert Motherwell and others. In
1918 Provincetown was declared the largest artists' colony in
the world.
Many of the New York School Artists including Pollock and Frankenthaller,
as well as countless actors and writers have worked in Dune Shacks
and Bayside studios, inspired by our famous light, enticing beaches,
and sophisticated night life. The town's array of galleries
display a rich assortment of work by established and emerging
artists.
A small
group of Provincetown artists have come together to create a winter
cooperative gallery in one exhibition space
of the
Berta Walker Gallery. The gallery’s intention is to adapt
an exhibition program for the “off-season” time during
which Berta Walker Gallery is not presenting formal
exhibitions. The co-op’s name, 6 Degrees Gallery,
is derived from the theory that everyone in the world is connected
to everyone else within six degrees, through a path of six people
or fewer. The connection of the artists work is evident
through form, texture, & rhythm,
as expressed in a variety of mediums. The 6 Degree artists
are all professionals in other fields as well as full-time professional
artists combining and enriching their art mediums with
their other talents. The artists
see this as a way of exhibiting during a season when the
art world pressure is not quite as consuming as during the summer.
Created
in 2003, the gallery's founding artists, Sky Power, Will Sherwood,
and Ken Fishman, invite you to explore our web site and visit the
gallery's current exhibition in person.
